Dr. Flemming Balvig Biography




Dr. Flemming Balvig joined the faculty at the University of Copenhagen in 1972. He is currently a Professor in Sociology of Law & Criminology and the Department Chair. His research interests include evaluation of the Danish police reform, Social Norms approach to prevention of crime, victimization of crime and public attitudes to punishment.

Dr. Balvig serves as a member of the Danish Government's Commission on Restorative Justice as well as the Danish Government's Commission on Youth Delinquency. In 2006 he became the leader of the Center of Knowledge of Social Norms Approach. He was awarded a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar to work at the California State University, Sacramento, USA in 1991. His other honors include Ambassador of the City of Ringsted in 2007, European Crime Prevention Award (ECPA) in 2006 and the Lecturer of the Year in Argentina Award in 1997. He is widely published in his field.
